Social Media for Small Business: How much time does it really take?

[tweetmeme source=”helpmerhonda11″ only_single=false]

Most small business owners know that they SHOULD be using social media to grow their business…and business owners who have invested the time are reaping great benefits in exposure, traffic, and leads…but most lack the time and the know-how.

This is the small business dilemma when it comes to social media.

Do you know any small business owners who can find another 6-11 hours per week? I don’t!!!  A recent article* on social media for small business stated:

“…the majority of marketers (56 percent) are using social media for 6 hours or more each week, and nearly one in three invest 11 or more hours weekly.  Portnof said she is on there several hours a day, but not all at the same time.  Fladung said it depends on how big they want to be.“One hour a day is a fair amount of time; it’s decent,” he said.”

Here are my observations:

1.  Small business owners are BUSY people, who typically wear many hats

2.  they don’t know where or how to start…for the uninitiated, social networking feels overwhelming at the beginning

3.  they need help to do it right:  an overall plan/strategy, and then training/tools and coaching (or a pro to manage it).

Until we can figure out how to find more hours in the day, there will be a need for both social media training, and outsourced social media management, geared to the small business owner.

Please weigh in: If you are a small business owner or outsourcing professional,  how much time do you spend on social media?  How much time do you think it takes to do it right?

I agree that there is definitely a strong need for social media training, and outsourced social media management. I’ve started to schedule a set time in my daily calendar for social media marketing, but have brought on additional staff to dedicate more time to it.

    • Katrena,

      Thanks for weighing in.

I checked out your website, twitter and facebook…and loved the radio show! All this must take time…do you mind sharing how much time in an average day or week?

As a business owner, are the benefits on time invested something you measure, or just have a gut feeling about?

      Thanks again!
